Norwegian Spirit Day at Sea Activity Together for Good

by Shannon · 7 comments

The Norwegian Spirit welcomed Nancy and I with open arms and open hearts. We boarded in New Orleans and we enjoyed a lunch at Cagney’s while our cabin was getting ready. Cagney’s offers private dining for suite and VIP guests during breakfast and lunch. Our wait staff was excited to hear about our project and they even pulled the chef out of the kitchen to strike a pose with Nancy. The food was delicious and I opted for a crab cake appetizer and an entrée of seared scallop risotto.

Nancy and I strolled around the ship trying to get familiar with where things are. It was so exciting to see that a donation box was set up at reception and that the Freestyle Daily advertised our sea day craft activity. Soon our cabin was ready and after the muster drill (safety briefing) we headed to Galaxy of the Stars, the forward deck viewing area and bar. We sipped on a glass of Champagne as the Norwegian Spirit glided down the Mississippi River towards the Gulf of Mexico. As a Louisiana resident, I have to admit that it was a magical moment to experience this.

Monday morning, our day at sea was exciting. Our Together for Good craft activity was listed as the Tip of the Day in the Freestyle Daily, letting passengers know what we were doing and how they could participate. As the time got closer, passengers started trickling in and before we knew it, we had to find more chairs for all the people willing to lend their imagination and an hour of their cruise to help decorate a school in Costa Maya.

Our goal during our visit to Costa Maya, Mexico is work with Uai Nat Ze Foundation, which assists the local community. We will be visiting two very small schools which consist of two rooms each. We’ll decorate the school with the help of local children, the mayor, and local community representatives, using the handmade decorations made during our day at sea activity. We hope to deliver a small amount of school supplies, if things go well during our port stop. Depending upon our connectivity in Costa Maya, you can follow along on Twitter and see if we are successful in making all of our stops and delivering some smiles and goodwill to the community of Costa Maya.

Passengers leave a part of themselves in Costa Maya schools.

I want to send a big thanks to all of you online who are helping us spread the word through Twitter and Facebook. It is so nice to be part of a travel community that helps and supports each other’s endeavors. Our mission is to show travelers how even the smallest gesture of assistance can make a difference.

Shannon,
Glad to hear your cruise went well. I’m sure that you and Nancy have only scratched the tip of the voluntourism iceberg!
