I may be a travel writer, but I’m also a closet gamer. When I’m home during the day and the family leaves for school and work, I break out the game systems and go to town. It excited me, when last spring, through serendipitous events, my son had the chance to take part in Louisiana’s Digital Workforce Intensive put on by 3D Squared. The event was a one week intensive training session for youth with the students being placed into teams to develop video games with an educational element.
I was able to attend the last few days of the intensive and was very impressed with the mentors, who are game industry professional giving their time and knowledge to help the next generation. Not only are these people talented, but they’re just downright good people. Since the intensive, a few of these rock stars have become some very good friends and, because of these friendships, I’ve had the opportunity to see how a video game gets from idea all the way to the consumer’s hands.
A game I’ve been following for some time is Doctor Fizzwhizzle’s Animal Rescue. My friends over at Replay Games developed a game that is fun for the entire family. Players can take a virtual island adventure and help save some animals. This island mystery puzzle game has more than 180 levels and includes 60 animal species. It even offers a special kid’s mode with fun animal quizzes, making this an educational tool without the kids even realizing they’re learning. It should also come with a special warning: Addictive for Adults! Plus, it’s super affordable at less than $20 on Amazon.
Friends support each other, and I’m showing my support for the people at Replay Games by offering a giveaway and asking gamers everywhere to go out and purchase a copy of this fun game. One lucky reader can win a special signed copy of Doctor Fizzwhizzle’s Animal Rescue. Just leave a comment stating what island you would love to visit, if given the chance. Contest ends Sunday, December 27, 2009 at 11:59 PM CST with winner being announced sometime the next day. US entries only, please.
Update: Congratulations to Heidi Bakor! The black sand beach you’re looking for is Panalu’u Beach on The Big Island of Hawai’i. I hope you get a chance to see it one day.
Disclosure: I purchased this game for a giveaway in support of my friends, who developed this product. You can purchase your own copy through my Amazon Affiliate Link: Doctor Fizzwhizzle’s Animal Rescue.
