He's from an ethnically ambigious background and I think it's intentional. Many people, including me, have hinted that his background is either Middle Eastern or Northern Indian, evidenced by the name "Naveen," which is common among this group and the fact that his mother appeared in a sari. I've never personally been to New Orleans or Louisiana in general but I've always been interested in its paranormal cultures. There is always a fight good vs. evil and even though Dr. Facilier looks like my father (so much so that its pretty creepy) I believe that anything is possible. I also think people should get over their aversion to anything different and just enjoy what will soon become another Disney Classic ^.^ because I personally can't wait to watch The Princess and The Frog with my nieces.
